- The leader and fighter against the Dutch colonialism in the battle known as the Padri War from 1803-1838.
- The existence of this figure in history, was generally considered as a controversial as he was responsible for the violence and bloodshed of many people. Ironically, on account of a number of written sources referred to him as an emotionally charged, fierce and frightening character.
- He is a student of Tuanku Nan Tua but after receive Nan Tua teaching, he became a padri. His approach is too radical in comparison to Tuanku Nan Tua.
For Tuanku Nan Renceh, his teacher‘s “piecemeal action now become annoying … and he decided that each village must be transformed into an Islamic community as rapidly
as possible.” (Dobbin, p. 132)
- The one who initiate jihad against heresy practised in Minangkabau society and disagreed with tunku Nan Tua persuasive method in preacing, he want to reform Minangkabau to Muslim as rapidly as possible.
