TRIO HAJIS
It is the name given to refer the three pilgrims who recently returned back to Indonesia in 1803 from Mecca, Saudi Arabia. They were studying there and may received the influence from the doctrine of Wahabism at Mecca during the time of purification of aqidah that happened during that period. They started to compare the sociological environment in Mecca and their hometown which is Minangkabau.
  • They are the three pilgrims who returned from Makkah to the West Nusantara.
  • Haji Miskin, Haji Abdul Rahman (Piobang) and Haji Muhammad Arif (Sumanik). 
  • They were studying in the East-West Cairo, Al-Azhar and finally in Saudi Arabia. 
  • They got influenced by the transformations and reformation led by the reformist movement (islah) during that time developed in the Middle East. 
  • When they come back to the West Sumatra and see the strong practice of Minangkabau society to the adat even they are Muslims. 
  • They were fired with the initiative to reform the society of Minangkabau by following the reformist trend as they experienced in the middle east back then.
  • Haji Miskin insisted that the complete transformation of Minangkabau society into an Islamic community could be legitimately achieved by the use of force.

  • Haji Miskin was dissatisfied with the accommodative and non-militant method of reforming the society
  • Assumes to be strongly influenced by the Wahabism by the Dutch.
